Skiing towards the sun, enjoying the peace and quiet of ski touring in the Nockberge mountains or ice skating on Lake Weissensee. Discover your winter vacation...

A mountain landscape with magnificent views, in between idyllic lakes and a mild winter climate with especially many sunny days is waiting for you. And because Carinthia is located in the border triangle of Austria, Italy and Slovenia, the influence of the Alps-Adriatic region can also be felt in culinary and cultural terms.

Towards the sun on skis
Carinthia's ski resorts offer relaxing winter vacations on and off the slopes. Modern, comfortable cable cars with heated seats, such as those at Nassfeld or Gerlitzen Alpe, challenging downhill runs on Turrach and Katschberg, or Carinthia's highest ski areas, the Mölltal Glacier/Ankogel and the Grossglockner/Heiligenblut ski area amidst the three-thousand-meter peaks, guarantee snow-sure fun until well into spring. The smaller Carinthian ski areas in the Lavant Valley and in the Nockberge Mountains are family-friendly and offer clearly arranged slopes.

Ski touring in Carinthia

Ski tours on the Nockberge Trail
The Nockberge Trail, Austria's first ski touring trail that can be booked online, connects the five ski resorts of Katschberg, Innerkrems, Turrach, Falkert and Bad Kleinkirchheim/St. Oswald. It is suitable for leisurely ski tourers who have a good knowledge of this sport, are in good physical condition, but do not want to encounter high-alpine passages. For each of the five daily stages, up to six hours of walking time should be planned. Since lifts and cable cars are available in some parts, you can save yourself some meters in altitude on each stage. According to the motto: Start when, where, with whom and how you want.

Ice skating at Lake Weissensee in Carinthia

Ice skating on Lake Weissensee
In winter, some of Carinthia's lakes freeze into mirror-smooth open-air skating rinks, where ice skaters, field hockey players and ice shooters cavort. Austria's southernmost province is also home to the largest frozen natural ice surface in Europe - Lake Weissensee. The traditional Alternative Dutch 11 Cities Tour is always held here in January - the king's discipline runs over 200 kilometers.

Sun ski in Austria Carinthia

Sun skiing from mid-March
The supreme discipline under the southern winter sun is sun skiing from mid-March until the end of the winter season. This is particularly celebrated in the Nassfeld ski area, which is transformed into the largest sun terrace in the Alps. A unique natural event in Warmbad Villach finally heralds the arrival of spring. Near the Kärnten Therme, at the foot of the Dobratsch, the so-called Maibachl begins to bubble up as the snow melts. Near the main spring, two pools have formed in the middle of the forest, where you can bathe in the thermal water, which is up to 28°C, in the open air. The water has a healing effect.
