The SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun not only connects countless slopes, but also the cantons of Graubünden and Uri.

Skiing on 120 kilometers of slopes.

It took three years and seven new transport facilities to unite the three ski areas of Gemsstock, Nätschen-Gütsch and Sedrun-Oberalppass to form the modern SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun. In December, the last link in the connecting chain will now be closed: With the opening of the new Schneehüenerstock Express gondola lift, skiers and snowboarders will be able to switch from one side of the Oberalp Pass to the other as often as they like, starting this winter.

Graubünden and Uri, Rhaeto-Romanic and German
What most winter sports enthusiasts will not notice in the process: They cross a cantonal border on the slopes. And this is unique: The SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun is the first intercantonal skiing area in Switzerland. About half of the lifts and 120 kilometers of slopes are located in the canton of Uri, the others in Graubünden. As a result, the ski area combines two cultures and even two language regions: in the Graubünden mountain village of Sedrun, east of the Oberalp Pass, Rhaeto-Romanic is spoken; in Andermatt, in central Switzerland, west of the top of the pass, Swiss German is spoken.

Modern gastronomic offer on the mountain and new resort in the valley
The snow-making facilities and the mountain gastronomy have also been expanded and modernized. Four restaurants were given a new concept that focuses on regional ingredients, and new dining rooms. Three of them are located on the Gemsstock: the "Pastakeller", the "Gummel" with potato specialties and the "Fonduebeizli". On the Nätschen, a new family restaurant with a large play area for the little ones has also been opened. On the Schneehüenerstock, another new restaurant with around 200 seats is being built for the start of winter.

Après-ski on rails
If, after a long day on the slopes, you lack the energy to make the return trip up the mountain, guests head straight down to the valley and take the train back to their accommodation. This is because all the valley stations of the SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun are on the line of the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway, and the ride is free for ski ticket holders. With the après-ski train with bar and lounge area, which runs four times a day between Disentis and Andermatt, this is particularly worthwhile. Whether it's a "Kafi Luz" - a typical Central Swiss coffee with a shot - or a platter of Graubünden dried meat and mountain cheese: in the specially equipped train cars, you can get everything you need for après-ski. And on weekends, there's even a DJ.
