The Slovenians like to serve one of their many fine wines with their varied dishes, as wine growing has a long tradition in Slovenia.

Connoisseurs distinguish three wine-growing areas at once: the Primorska coastal area, Posavje ("land on the Sava River") and Podravje ("land on the Drava River"). These are in turn divided into 14 regions, where first-class wine cellars show guests the Slovenian winemaking tradition and the special features of the area by practical example. High-quality Slovenian top and predicate wines can be tasted and purchased here. More than 20 wine routes in the three regions invite visitors to discover and linger with a varied offer of homemade delicacies and good wines.

Festivals around the wine
One of the highlights among the events in honor of wine is the Festival of the Old Vine in Maribor in September: now vintners are harvesting the 400-year-old vines that thrive on the hills around "Maribor". At the end, the last vat of grapes and the first basket of fertilizer symbolically meet to ceremoniously give back to the vine what was taken from it with the grapes. The youngest pannier bearer puts a grape on the vine so that the vine can drink the juice of its own fruit.

Traditionally, on St. Martin's Day, one of the oldest folk holidays, Slovenians thank God for the good grape harvest. Of course, the delicious St. Martin's goose is not missing from the nationwide celebrations of the new wine. It is a popular celebration because it falls at the time when the autumn field work is coming to an end. In the days around November 11, the must is turned into wine. In the vineyards of Ormot and Jeruzalem, the feast of St. Martin is also celebrated on the tourist farms, so that guests can participate in the festivities.
