The blooming of thousands of alpine flowers attracts visitors to the Julian Alps from May 24 - June 09, 2024.

On guided hikes and in workshops, the festival offers all nature enthusiasts an impressive look into the world of mountain flowers and herbs.

The millennia-long coexistence of man and nature has shaped the landscape of the Julian Alps and created habitats for many unique plants. However, a large part of the meadows in is created by man. Without the careful work on the ground, the meadows would be overgrown by the forest and at the higher altitudes would turn into heather and rocks - and all the beautiful floral richness of the meadows from the valley to the high mountains would be lost.

The location, the rugged terrain, the altitude difference, the influence of the Mediterranean Sea and the geological profile of Bohinj have resulted in an extraordinary diversity of vegetation:

In the valley there is a colorful meadow flora (spring honeysuckle, arnica, bluebells...).

The lower mountains are adorned in spring by the beautiful Cypripedium calceolus (yellow lady's slipper), the Bohinj iris, the Gentiana clusii (true alpine gentian).... adorned.

The Fužina Mountains are rich in scree flora that occurs above 2000 meters. Small bright spots of color between gray rocks gladden our hearts here... the Dolomite cinquefoil (Potentilla nitida), the Celestial Herald (Eritrichium nanum), the Triglav gentian and Triglav pippa (Gentiana terglouensis - Crepis terglouensis)....

At the end of June, the black cabbage (Nigritella) and the alpine edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) appear - the plant species of the raised bogs, which originated from peat mosses.

Wild plants play an important role in the fragile ecosystem of the mountains. There are few areas in the Alps that have such a diverse flora as those in the Julian Alps! The proximity to the Mediterranean is reflected in the heat-loving vegetation of the southern slopes of the lower Bohinj and Pršivec mountains.

Indeed, in a relatively small and easily accessible space, a wealth of plants can be found here, offering unforgettable experiences, beauties and insights to the attentive nature lover.

The International Wildflower Festival pays homage to these botanical beauties with a colorful bouquet of guided tours, events and culinary experiences. In over 24 villages and thus 300 km², they discover the beauty and healing power of Slovenia's alpine flowers.
