From gentle to wild and on a first-name basis with chamois and eagle. Discover unique hiking tours in the Karwendel and Rofan Mountains Nature Park.

High above Lake Achensee lie the approximately 2,300-meter-high mountain peaks of the Rofan Mountains, providing a view of the "fjord" of Tyrol. The expansive Rofan Mountains can do both. Gentle climbs over green meadows lead to the peaks, the other side of which slopes rockily and steeply downward. An Eldorado for hikers and families as well as for experienced hikers. The Rofan cable car takes you comfortably up to 1,831 meters. Hikes of varying degrees of difficulty start from the starting point at the mountain station.

Beforehand, be sure to enjoy the impressive panoramic view of the neighboring peaks such as Hochiss and Ebner Joch, with the giants Großglockner and Hochkönig greeting you from afar. Perhaps stop off at the Erfurter Hütte near the top station. Most of the huts are located on the side facing the Achensee, with a wonderful view of the Tyrolean Sea. Behind it begins the alpine mountain world.

In the west, the Karwendel Nature Park - which has received the prestigious national award "Nature Park of the Year 2020" - in the Karwendel Mountains of the same name provides the dreamlike fjord backdrop. In the largest contiguous protected area of the Northern Limestone Alps, hikers roam untouched valleys with chamois and ibex, observe marmots, deer and hares, while birds of prey soar through the skies. Special summit experiences are offered, for example, by the fabulous view from the 2,457-meter Sonnjoch or the 2,106-meter Montscheinspitze - here, however, absolute surefootedness is required. Away from the black mountain tours, the leisurely alpine hikes in the Karwendel valleys are enticing. The alpine pastures are partly managed and serve the guests real Tyrolean delicacies.

The legendary Karwendel March on August 29 is a very special nature and sports experience for long-distance hikers and runners. There is a choice of 35 or 52 kilometers through the mountain range of the same name, and everyone can cover the distance in their own mode of locomotion.

Tyrolean Eagle Trail at Lake Achensee
A dream for all long-distance hikers and those who want to become one is the 413 km long, high-alpine Tiroler Adlerweg. Three of the 24 stages run around Lake Achensee.
