The Swiss autumn is a true spectacle of color. When the larches turn golden yellow, the lakes glisten dark blue and the mountain peaks are already covered in white sugar.
Discover with us the most beautiful autumn hikes in Grisons and Valais.
Wildlife watching included - Hike to Lac Bleu, Valais
Hikers reach Lac Bleu in a good 45 minutes from La Gouille or on the somewhat easier but longer trail from Arolla in one and a half hours. Surrounded by mighty three-thousand-meter peaks and golden-yellow larches, the azure lake glistens in the brilliant autumn sun. On the autumn colored slopes - with a bit of luck - marmots and chamois can be spotted. So it is definitely worth taking binoculars and a camera.
A real natural spectacle - Lake Silvaplana and Lake Sils, Grisons
The two largest lakes in the Upper Engadine are among the most famous places for autumn-colored larch forests. Even Nietzsche was inspired by this unique landscape. Especially the peninsula Chastè, which juts into the Silsersee, is an absolute must - here hikers imagine themselves in a world of fairies and elves. And if you are lucky, you can observe a special natural spectacle on the shores of the lakes: When the golden larches lose their first needles, the movement of the water creates the unique Silserkugeln - balls of larch needles up to the size of ostrich eggs. An old legend tells that in times of famine, wild men rolled up food in Silser balls and transported it from Maloja to Sils across the lake. There are several hiking trails around the lakes of Silvaplana and Sils.
Three days through the UNESCO World Heritage - Lötschental, Valais
An autumn hike through the golden larch forests of the Lötschental is more than a feast for the eyes. On day one, the roughly three-hour hike runs along the Legend Trail, where mystical stories from the region can be discovered. Day two takes hikers up to 2358 meters for about two and a half hours - right into the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. There, the only private and self-sufficiently functioning high-alpine mountain hut, the Anenhütte, presents itself. On the third day, hikers reach the Fafleralp, where numerous flocks of sheep stay over the summer. If you time it perfectly, you can witness the alpine driving down of the 700 or so animals in September.
To the most beautiful spot in Switzerland - Lai da Palpuogna, Grisons
The small, hidden lake with the mystical-sounding name was once voted the most beautiful spot in Switzerland by Swiss television. Especially in autumn, the Lai da Palpuogna (Palpuongna Lake), located at the Albula Pass in the canton of Grisons, offers a real feast for the eyes. For then not only the majestic surrounding mountains are reflected in the crystal-clear, green-blue shimmering mountain water, but also the golden-colored larches. Hikers reach the lake in 45 minutes from the Preda train station on a forest path leading uphill. Picnic areas with a fireplace invite you to linger.
