Slovenia not only holds a particularly large variety of 52 different grape varieties in its three main growing regions of Primorska, Posavje and Podravje, but also numerous ways to enjoy and experience them. Whether white, red, rosé or even orange - the interplay of different climatic influences, soils, locations and production methods enables the individual regions to offer their very own selection of varieties, in which every connoisseur can find his or her personal favorite wine.

The Primorska wine region is famous for its strong and dry wines.
Four wine routes run through the wine-growing region, which stretches from the Slovenian Adriatic coast in the south to the Julian Alps in the north: the Brda Wine Route, the Vipava Wine Route, the Karst Wine Route and the Istrian Wine Route. In Goriška Brda, right on the Italian border, white wines such as Rebula, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are produced, as well as red wines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.Particularly adventurous wine lovers will embark on a jeep safari there that, while it doesn't have any exotic animals in store, will take guests into the picturesque vineyards and present them with the Brda's variety of flavors. The tour includes exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at selected winemakers and lasts either three or six hours. In Koper, wine connoisseurs can expect an idyllic picnic amidst the vineyards, and in Izola, local drops are tasted not in wine cellars but aboard a boat on the sea.

The wine-growing region of Posavje is located in Pannonian Slovenia and is considered the cradle of Cviček,
which is known for its low alcohol content and health benefits. The wine, protected with its own quality mark, is grown exclusively in the Dolenjska wine region and consists of a mixture of red and admixed white varieties. Another special feature in Dolenjska are the charming vineyard cottages, which once served as accommodation for winegrowers and today, with their picturesque location on the steep slopes, are rented out as vacation accommodation. Posavje holds, in addition to the bright red Cviček, numerous red varieties such as Blue Portugieser and Blaufränkisch, but also white varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Welschriesling and Pinot Blanc. The wine roads of the region lead past numerous so-called repnicas - special cellars dug into the ground, which invite you to taste local wines.

Meanwhile, the Podravje winegrowing region can call itself home to the "oldest vine in the world.
In the middle of the city of Maribor in northeastern Slovenia grows the approximately 450-year-old vine, which still bears noble fruit and has even made it into the Guinness Book of Records. No wonder, then, that the precious plant has its own museum and festivals such as the "Festival of the Old Vine" and the "Festive Harvest of the Old Vine" dedicated to it every September. In Prekmurje, on the other hand, guests taste predicate wines from local winemakers and complex red wines. In addition, there are some vineyards in the eastern part of Podravje, which are among the four percent of the best vineyards in the world. Wine has been growing here since Roman times on ideal soil and under the influence of continental climate. Podravje is known for elegant white wines of international and also some autochthonous varieties. The predominant variety is Welschriesling, although Furmint, Riesling, Chardonnay as well as Sauvignon, Traminer and Gelber Muskateller are also strongly represented.
