Julian Alps
Discover the Julian Alps on two wheels. The Juliana Bike trail will take you through picturesque valleys and villages, across panoramic plateaus and challenging mountain passes.
The realm of the Golden Horn, as we Slovenians like to call the mountain world of the Julian Alps, is full of breathtaking sights worth discovering. Now you can explore them at the foot of the highest mountain range in Slovenia also by bike. The Juliana Bike circuit takes you around and across the Julian Alps and is part of the Slovenian Cycle Route. It connects villages, towns, valleys, mountain passes and plateaus. It runs on roads and bike paths, forest roads, agricultural roads and driveways.
Before you set off on the picturesque circular route, we would like to introduce you to some of its "personal" data... Number of stages: 7 (+ 3 accession stages), Total length: 290 km, Average stage length: 40 km, Total ascent altitude difference: 8,500 m, Average ascent altitude difference per stage: 1,375 m
Well, ready to get going?
On this 280-kilometer tour, you'll cycle through five destinations that have a lot in common, even though each one has its own unique local color.
Thetour around and across the Julian Alps starts in Bohinj, more precisely in Bohinjska Bistrica, and leads you first via Goreljek to the green Pokljuka plateau, covered with extensive spruce forests. From here it goes downhill to Gorje and further through the picturesque Radovna river valley to Mojstrana. Here you can join the cycling trail that will take you to the popular mountain sports center Kranjska Gora. Over the mountain pass Vršič, which by the way is a real challenge for cyclists, you will cross over to the Soča valley: first to Bovec and then on to Tolmin. Via Zakojca, the route crosses over to the mountainous area of Cerkno. From here the trail leads to Podbrdo and via the Sorica high mountain pasture back to Bohinjska Bistrica (town east of Bohinjsko Jezero at the Triglav National Park).
