Over the course of more than 300 kilometers from its source in the Karwendel Mountains to its mouth at the Danube near Deggendorf, the Isar transforms from a true wild river, on whose banks and gravel banks chamois, alpine salamanders, edelweiss or rare orchids find a home, to a species-rich floodplain to a river course shaped by humans.
