Old courtyards instead of modern new buildings, carved village fountains instead of traffic jams. Schwangau is located at the southern end of the Romantic Road.

The small village at the foot of the royal castles offers something precious: a stay beyond the hustle and bustle and crowds! "My castle should be unique in the whole world, famous far across the sea..." so once dreamed King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The dream of the royal castle Neuschwanstein, which has become stone, is enthroned today high above the Schwangau meadows, world-famous and known as a landmark for all of Europe. Then as now, the romantic castle enchants its visitors and lends royal dignity to the region, according to the king "one of the most beautiful places to be found". Right next door is Hohenschwangau Castle. This is where the fairy-tale king spent his childhood and from where he later observed the construction of his dream castle.

However, Schwangau offers much more than a visit to the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Vacation on the water or in the mountains - the decision is easy here. Situated at four lakes and the nature reserve Ammergebirge, the local activities are as varied as they are numerous. 120 km of well-kept hiking and walking trails at various altitudes, as well as excellent Nordic walking routes offer something for everyone. From wild and romantic climbs to tours in the high mountains and walks in the plains. The lake circuit hiking trails are just as much an option as the ascent of the Tegelberg with its breathtaking views over the Allgäu and Ötztal Alps, the Wetterstein Mountains and even Lake Starnberg. The catered mountain huts along the hiking trails invite you to linger and rest. It is hardly surprising that when hiking in the mountains, many everyday worries are left behind in the valley.
