Switzerland is known for its breathtaking mountain scenery and clear mountain lakes. Let yourself be whisked away into this wonderful natural setting as we show you 10 of the most beautiful lakes.

Above Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps (picture above) lies the Bachalpsee on a ridge at an altitude of over 2,200 meters. The lake is divided by a natural dam. The lower section of the Bachalpsee is six meters lower than the upper section. There is a wonderful panoramic view from the shore. In good weather, you can see the Schreckhorn, the Finsteraarhorn and the Wetterhorn, all three mountains are over 3,500 meters high.

Lake Sils is located in the Upper Engadine at 1,797 meters above sea level. Sometimes the lake reflects the surrounding mountain peaks with razor-sharp clarity, sometimes the Maloja wind stirs up the approximately four square kilometers of water. You can relax on this lake, but you can also go boating, surfing, swimming or hiking around it.

Lake Melchsee lies at 1,890 meters near the famous winter sports resort of Melchsee-Frutt in the canton of Obwalden. In summer, the Frutt is a sea of flowers. The deep blue Melchsee, which is rich in trout, is not only a delight for passionate fishermen.

The Lacs de Fenêtre are three small mountain lakes (2456 m, 2495 m, 2512 m) at the end of the Val Ferret in the Valais Alps on a plateau between the Great St. Bernard and the Mont Blanc massif. The lakes lie on a mossy plateau densely overgrown with cotton grass. The only nearby village is the hamlet of Ferret (1700 m), which is only inhabited in summer.

The Gauli Glacier is a valley glacier around six kilometers long and one kilometer wide. It is located in the eastern Bernese Alps. Its glacier tongue ends at an altitude of around 2,100 meters and flows into two lakes. The Swiss Alpine Club's Gauli Hut is the starting point for glacier and mountain tours. The Gauli glacier suddenly became known in the media after an American Douglas C-53 aircraft crashed on the high snow cover of the Gauli glacier in 1946.

Riffelsee lies at an altitude of 2,770 meters at the foot of the Riffelhorn near Zermatt in the canton of Valais. Although it is one of the smallest mountain lakes in Switzerland, the east face of the Matterhorn is reflected in its clear waters. This view is one of the most popular postcard motifs in Switzerland.

The Seealpsee lies at an altitude of over 1,100 meters in the middle of the Alpenstein region in the canton of Appenzell. It is a popular excursion destination for hikers, and not just because you can refresh yourself in the cool water here. The path from Ebenalp down to Seealpsee is a real experience. It leads past the Wildkirchli and through a prehistoric cave.

The Lägh da Cavloc is a Graubünden mountain lake near the Maloja Pass. It lies at an altitude of 1,900 meters and is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers. Hikers can reach the Lägh da Cavaloc from Maloja in around an hour on well-maintained paths. Lägh da Cavaloc is also known as Lake Cavaloc and Lago di Cavloccio.
