The Julian Alps, the Steiner Alps and the Pohorje Mountains are crisscrossed by numerous hiking and biking trails leading to the highest peaks and to the most beautiful rivers, lakes and waterfalls.

On one side, the Golden Horn watches over the natural treasures of Slovenia's highest peaks, greenest valleys and most beautiful lakes, while on the other side, hilltops border the city of the oldest grapevine in the world.

Bled

With its picturesque glacial lake and castle perched on a mighty rock above the lake, Bled is one of the most beautiful Alpine resorts in Europe.

Bled is characterized by a mild, healthy, subalpine climate and has the longest swimming season compared to other Alpine resorts. The peaks of the surrounding Julian Alps and Karavanke Mountains protect the resort from cold north winds. The beauty of the mountains reflected in the lake water, sun, silence and fresh air offer ideal conditions for a pleasant rest or active vacation at any time of the year.

With 6000 years of continuous settlement, Kranj is Slovenia's oldest town. The town stretches on a rock by the second largest town cañon in Europe. Thanks to the greatest Slovenian poet France Prešeren, it is also the cultural heart of Slovenia. The peculiarity of the town is the cañon in the middle of the town center.

Maribor - Pohorje

The capital of Slovenian Styria.
The Maribor-Pohorje region is the ideal starting point for discovering the special features of eastern Slovenia. The green mountains in the easternmost part of Alpine Slovenia are crisscrossed by numerous ski slopes as well as hiking and biking trails and are located in the immediate vicinity of the city. The oldest vine in the world grows in the center of the city.

The 400-year-old vine of the Žametovka variety, which is also known by numerous other names, is even in the Guinness Book of Records and still bears fruit.

The Rogla - Pohorje region attracts with vast forests, a peat bog and several lakes. Numerous paths and trails connect the Rogla ski resort and the Zreče spa with interesting villages. Not far from Slovenske Konjice are the Žiče Charterhouse with the oldest inn in the country and the Cultural Center for European Space Technologies.

A popular hiking destination are the lakes Lovrenška jezera. The small lakes are located in the peat bog of the Pohorje Mountains between Planika (1391m) and Mulejev vrh (1533m) in the headwaters of Radoljna, Mislinja and Velka. There are between 11 and 22 lakes, depending on the current amount of water there.

Fossils from the Middle Triassic were found in the Steiner Alps, which is a specialty of world importance. They are exhibited in the Rinka Center.
