When a child is born in Slovenia, as the saying goes, the stork immediately places a pair of skis next to the cradle.

No wonder, because the country between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea offers countless opportunities to romp around in the white element. Whether it's downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, touring or ice climbing - there are no limits to your urge to move. The most famous winter sports areas are located in the north of the country, stretching from the Julian Alps in the west through the Savinj Alps to the Pohorje Mountains in the east, and the price level is moderate by European standards.

Ski heil in Kranjska Gora
If you ask ski fans worldwide about a famous winter sports resort in Slovenia, the answer in most cases is: "Kranjska Gora!". The idyllic alpine village in the border triangle between Italy, Austria and Slovenia is considered the traditional ski resort par excellence. On 125 hectares and between 810 and 1,295 meters above sea level, against the backdrop of snow-covered two-thousand-meter peaks, a winter wonderland of the highest order stretches out with 20 lifts as well as countless slopes for beginners, families, pros and snowboarders alike. Around 40 kilometers of groomed trails lead from the center of town past the Sava Spring, the Planica ski jump, deep into the Tamar Valley or to Gozd Martuljek and make cross-country skiers' hearts beat faster. But even without boards, Kranjska Gora stands for pure adrenaline: snow rafting, touring skiing, dog sledding, snow biking, day or night snowshoe tours by torchlight, snowmobile excursions and ice climbing at the resounding Lucifer waterfall are just some of the activities on offer here.

Insider tip Pohorje
"Small but mighty!" is true of the Pohorje Mountains in eastern Slovenia, which are still largely considered an insider tip. Around the climatic health resort Rogla, families in particular will find guaranteed snow on at least 100 days a year and attractive winter sports conditions with slopes for both beginners and advanced skiers. For the little ones, friends of the same age, experienced ski instructors and multilingual supervisors are waiting in the ski kindergarten. At altitudes between 1,100 and 1,517 meters attract around 20 slopes, two of which can also be skied at night, as well as the largest snowboard fun park in southern Europe. FIS competitions have been held here regularly for over a decade. The high plateau covered with centuries-old forests is also considered an Eldorado for cross-country skiers with its carefully groomed trails. And if you don't want to strap on your skis for once, whiz down the 1,360-meter-long toboggan run, plunge into the 34.5-degree thermal water in neighboring Zrece .
