The Kalkalpen National Park protects the last great forest wilderness in the heart of Austria.

Colorful mixed forests, crystal-clear mountain streams, mountain peaks with great views and charming alpine pastures characterize the landscape. They provide ideal habitats for animals and plants that have become rare, such as the Clusius primrose, lady's slipper, white-backed woodpecker, golden eagle and even the lynx.

The Kalkalpen National Park consists of two mountain units:
Hinter- and Sengsengebirge belong to one of six ecologically particularly valuable regions of Austria that have been declared Kalkalpen National Park.

Unique and international
The Kalkalpen National Park is an internationally recognized protected area according to IUCN category II and is represented as a European protected area in the Natura 2000 network. Covering an area of 209 km², the Kalkalpen National Park today protects the largest contiguous forest area in Austria.

Forest wilderness in the heart of Austria
The Limestone Alps National Park is located in the southeast of Upper Austria between the rivers Enns and Steyr. The southern boundary is formed by the Windischgarstner Basin and the Hengst Pass on the border with Styria.

The two mountain units Reichraminger Hintergebirge and Sengsengebirge are the backbone of the national park. The Reichraminger Hintergebirge is one of the largest closed forest areas in Austria - a sea of forest that has not yet been cut up by public roads and settlements. Here we also find one of the longest intact stream systems in the Eastern Alps. The Sengsen Mountains are a northern outpost of the Alpine Limestone Alps. The main ridge, about 20 km long, reaches its highest point with the Hoher Nock (1,963m).
