Styria | Gesäuse
Wild water - steep rock: the breathtaking scenery of the Gesäuse National Park could not be described more aptly.
At the entrance to the Gesäuse, where the Enns finds its breakthrough between the Himbeerstein and Haindlmauer, the only Styrian National Park begins under the thunderous roar of the river gone wild. Downstream, the brightly glistening limestone and dolomite rocks of the Hochtor group tower vertically with a direct altitude difference of over 1,800m - a unique contrast.
Nature (experience) at the highest level
In addition to the consistent protection of the natural landscape for future generations, the unforgettable nature experience of its guests is in the foreground in the Gesäuse as an internationally recognized national park. The rangers of the national park take care of this: they know the Gesäuse like the back of their hand - from the countless plants and animals to the most beautiful power spots to the legendary stories that surround the "wild" Gesäuse.
And the best thing about it: rangers can be booked. Whether individually (book your guide) or through one of the numerous tours in the current program of events (from the Gesäuse Photo School to the research workshop in the Weidendom Adventure Center), the Gesäuse National Park rangers make the unique natural world an unforgettable experience unlike any other.
Visitor facilities
The heart of the National Park and its visitor facilities is the Weidendom Adventure Center with its world's first walk-through ecological footprint. The Weidendom is the largest living construction (m)work in the Alps and invites visitors from May to October to interactively explore and relax against the spectacular backdrop of the Hochtor Group. The Weidendom is also the starting point for exciting theme trails. With the energetic support of specially built tractors (so-called "Swiss-Tracks"), these trails can also be experienced completely barrier-free by wheelchair users.
