WRESTLING COW FIGHTS IN VALAIS

The Hérens cow is a traditional, fierce Valais cow breed. Just as traditional as the breed are the cow fights that take place in Valais in spring and fall.

They come out of their stables in a fighting mood to determine the hierarchy in the herd. After the regional competitions at the end of March, the crowning ceremony takes place in May at the national finals in the Arena Praz Bardy in Sion. In the second half of June, the battles on the summer pastures take place during the alpine stockings, followed by the summer stocking festivals. The new cow wrestling season begins with the regional competitions in the fall, where the Hérens cows can once again qualify for the national final.
